Fertilizing
Both our traditional fertilizer program and our organic fertilizer program are customized based on the initial soil test. We use commercial-grade fertilizing products for our traditional program. Did you know that a pesticide applicator’s license is required in MA in order for a contractor to spread fertilizer at your home? A Precise Maintenance is a fully licensed and fully insured landscaping and fertilizing company. Our pesticide license # is 34827 (MA Dept of Agricultural Resources).
A Precise Maintenance traditional fertilizer program consists of the following:
- Step 1 is the pre-emergent crabgrass control. A pre-emergent controller kills the crabgrass weed seeds before they can germinate. Crabgrass is a weed that can take over your lawn in a very quick time during the hot summer months. This step is completed during early Spring.
- Step 2 is a broad-leaf weed control. A broad-leaf weed controller helps control and eliminate dandelions and other broadleaf weeds. This step is completed during late Spring.
- Step 3 is a broad-leaf weed control. A broad-leaf weed controller helps control and eliminate dandelions and other broadleaf weeds. This step is completed during early Summer.
- Step 4 is a grub/insect control with fertilizer. A grub/insect controller helps eliminate the risk of turf damage due to insects eating the root of the grass. This step is completed during late Summer.
- Step 5 is a winterizing fertilizer. A winterizing fertilizer strengthens the roots of the grass, which will help in a quicker “green-up” of your lawn during the next Spring. This step is completed during mid-Fall.
Additional services may be recommended based upon your lawn conditions. These additional services include:
- A lime application, which helps correct the pH level in the soil and helps repair lawn damage incurred during the harsh winter months. The initial lime application would be during early Spring, during the Step 1 being application. A second application of lime may be recommended during the Fall (based upon soil test results) if an incorrect pH level is present.
- Aeration, which is the process of loosening heavily compacted soil in order to establish new root growth in your lawn. Aeration creates holes in the soil to help water and air circulate down to the root zone. This service would be completed during the early Fall.
- Dethatching, which removes thatch (dead grass) build-up. Removing this dead grass also helps water and air reach the soil. This service would be completed during the early Fall.
- Overseeding (also known as Slice seeding), which adds additional seed on top of your existing lawn to fill in bare spots and increase turf density. Thin turf and/or turf with exposed soil can be difficult to maintain. Weeds can take over and the soil can overheat and cause extensive damage to your lawn.
